Vendor Tax Revenues from SD Biker Rally Up In '09

The South Dakota Department of Revenue and Regulation says sales tax revenues from the 2009 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally increased from the 2008 rally.

South Dakota - Sales tax and tourism tax collected from temporary vendors totaled $862,107 in the northern Black Hills, which includes Sturgis and all communities in Meade and Lawrence counties.

In a release, the revenue department says the total is up $100,778 from last year's total.

The department says part of it can be attributed to an increase in South Dakota's tourism tax, which moved from 1 percent to 1.5 percent on July 1.

The 1,149 vendors at the 2009 rally were 42 fewer than the year before. Gross vendor sales totaled $11.9 million this year in the Northern Hills, $541,183 more than last year.
